BDO Basics - Origin of Dark Hunger

1. Introduction

Origins of Dark Hunger make reaching higher failstacks far more convenient for enhancing gear!
  • Origin of Dark Hungers need a fail stack of atleast a +100 without valk's cry stacks included
  • Origin of Dark Hungers let you increase your failstack without failing enhancements
  • Higher failstacks are a must when enhancing items like Blackstar, Primordial or Kharazad gear
  • Originally Origin of Dark Hungers were an event item, now you can obtain them from grind spots.

2. How Origins of Dark Hunger Work

Origins of Dark Hunger are used in the Extract menu of the Enhancement UI when speaking to the Black Spirit. By consuming an Origin of Dark Hunger you can increase your failstack.

These Origin of Dark Hungers were originally added with the Ulukita update and were an incentive to grind in the higher AP areas that were being added. Here's how they work:

The amount your failstack increases is determined based on your current failstack. At the time of writing, the effectiveness of Origin of Dark Hungers have been increased:

There's also a different varient called a Faint Origin of Dark Hunger which are cheaper but less effective. This version was added with the Land of the Morning Light grind zones.

They were added to help people enhance Kharazad accessories while farming for materials. They've also had their effectiveness increased to help with easier stacking:

3. How to Use Origins of Dark Hunger

Origins of Dark Hungers are really easy to use, there's raelly not much to it, but if you're unfamiliar with them you might not know where the UI is as it's a bit tucked away.

Simply talk to the Black Spirit as if you were about to enhance something:

Once you're there you'll see that the menu has three different options at the top of the window, click Extract.

Once you're on the Extract screen you'll be able to use your Origin of Dark Hunger to increase your fail stack.

The numbers highlighted in yellow shows the increase in fail stack amount that your Origin of Dark Hunger will provide. It's nice and simple.

The only thing to remember with this is that you'll need at least a +100 stack and that as you increase your failstack amount, Origins of Dark Hunger will provide less and less of an increase.

4. How to Obtain Origin of Dark Hunger

As previously mentioned the Origin of Dark Hungers were added with the Ulukita update, meaning they were a staple of the grind spots in that region, with most spots dropping them.

The drop rate for these items are pretty rare, mostly because they're a high value drop. You can also obtain them from the Central Marketplace:

Let's start with Origin of Dark Hunger, dropping in three Ulukita zones:

City of the Dead

Of the three available locations City of the Dead has the lowest silver per hour, significantly behind the other two Ulukita spots that offer Origin of Dark Hunger drops.

Unfortunately the drop rate for the Origin of Dark Hungers isn't all that great either. It does have the lowest recommended AP/DP at 310 /380 but farming silver somewhere else and using the market is probably more efficient.

Tungrad Ruins

In terms of Origin of Dark Hunger drop rates, Tungrad Ruins is the best of the three. The money per hour is really competitive too, it's a popular spot for money making for a reason.

It's AP / DP requirements are the middle ground between the three locations at 320 AP / 410 DP but the money per hour far exceeds City of the Dead.

Darkseeker's Retreat

Darkseeker's Retreat is one of the highest money per hour zones in the game at the time of writing, making it the best choice in terms of silver value while still having the chance to drop Origins of Dark Hunger.

The drop rate is only slightly below Tungrad Ruins but the requirements are 330 AP / 430 DP so definitely leaning more towards end game gear.

Honglim Base

Now for the Land of the Morning Light Zones. These two zones both drop Faint Origin of Dark Hunger which has a weaker effect but is also cheaper.

Honglim Base is a really good grind zone in terms of silver per hour for the gear score requirements of 270 AP / 360 DP. It also has some good material drops too making it a great grind spot regardless of Origins of Dark Hunger.

Dokkebi Forest

Dokkkebi Forest has a much higher gear score requirement at 310 AP / 420 DP which is quite a jump from the previous Land of the Morning Light zone, it also drops a lot of the same important materials.

The Faint Origin of Dark Hunger drop rate is almost double, though the extra money per hour might not be worth the extra gear score requirements.

Event Dim Origin of Dark Hunger

There's also an event version of Origins of Dark Hunger called [Event] Dim Origin of Dark Hunger, these are less effective than the two versions obtained from grind spots but worth noting.

Usually they'll be given out during special login rewards and they're handy if you need to build up failstacks a little at no cost, since they're given out for free.
